Search and Performance Max are tools for different situations, not automatic winners or losers. Search helps you organise advertising around search intent. Performance Max uses your goals and assets to reach across Google’s available advertising inventory. The useful question is whether your business has the measurement, creative material and follow-up process needed for the approach you choose.
Google describes Search campaigns as a way to reach people searching for relevant products and services. Performance Max is goal-based and can serve across channels. This broader reach changes the mix of placements and creative assets involved. It does not mean every placement or campaign will suit your business. Check the current feature set rather than relying on an old comparison chart.
Consider a focused Search test when you have one clear service, identifiable commercial queries and limited creative resources. A specialist industrial repair company may want to learn which service searches produce suitable requests. Organise tightly enough to connect the query, advert and destination. Search still requires judgement about matching, location, bidding and exclusions; it is not a manual-control guarantee.
Performance Max may be useful when you have reliable conversion goals, strong creative assets and the capacity to evaluate broader reach. Retailers also need accurate product information where a feed is used. For lead generation, poor goals can reward low-quality submissions. Check what enters the conversion system before treating automated optimisation as a solution to weak measurement.
Use qualified opportunities, customer acquisition cost and contribution where available. Do not judge Search by search clicks and Performance Max by all-channel reach, then call the numbers equivalent. Consider brand demand, existing customers and conversion delay. A campaign that appears efficient may be collecting demand you would have received anyway. Suitable experiments can help assess incremental value.
Create a clear offer, relevant landing pages, accurate locations and a lead-quality process. For asset-led campaigns, supply genuinely useful images, headlines, descriptions and video where appropriate. Review destination controls and current search controls in the account. Availability changes over time, so confirm the actual settings rather than assuming older limitations still apply.
Start with the campaign type that answers your immediate learning question within your budget. If you need to understand demand for a narrow service, focused Search can be easier to interpret. If you want to test broader reach with established measurement, consider Performance Max. Running both can make sense, but do not split a small allowance so widely that neither produces interpretable evidence.
A new plumbing service with one city, a phone-led sales process and little historical data might first verify call measurement and test a small set of commercial searches. A mature retailer with accurate product data and online sales measurement has a different starting point. This is a planning example, not a rule that one industry must use one campaign type.
List your conversion goal, available assets, geography, test budget and required reporting. Choose the approach that fits those inputs, then define how you will evaluate it.
